What Are Emergency Stop Switches?

Product

Emergency stop switches, also known as E-stops, are designed to immediately break a circuit to avert danger. Once pressed, this shuts down operations on industrial heavy-duty equipment.

On large industrial machines, an emergency stop button is typically located on the panel, and possibly in several other areas of the machine to be easily accessible in an event of danger. They can also be used to stop production issues. However, this is not a common practice as this can cause issues with the machines and can therefore affect production.

Emergency stop switches are located in many environments such as trains, workshops and manufacturing sites, industrial vehicles and agricultural applications.

Types of Emergency Stop Switches

There are 3 main types of E-stop Switches: push-pull, twist release and key release.

Push-Pull: The switch is pushed inwards to stop the machine.

Twist Release: The switch is push in to stop, but requires the button to be twisted to release.

Key Release: The switch pushed in to stop the machine, but can only be release with a designated key.

E-stops are designed to be highly visible and easy to access. We supply sizes 16mm-22mm, with mushroom or flat head, and support LED illumination or with text. Non-illuminated Emergency Stop Switches are also available.

Why do E-stops often have a mushroom head?

Guidelines are set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Whom outline the standards of emergency switches in order to create a safe working environment. They state emergency switches must be safe and easy to operate with one hand. Hence the mushroom head is easy to operate in this situation.
