A Relay is essentially an electromagnetic component that helps to regulate the flow of electric current within an electric circuit. Relays can work either as an on/off switch or as an amplifier (converting smaller currents to larger ones). But unlike a regular switch, relays are usually operated by an electrical current, rather than being pressed.
Relays are utilised in a broad range of industries, thanks to their versatility and wide range of uses in different applications. Typically, relays are employed when circuit isolation is necessary or when low or high power signals are needed to control the circuit.
Therefore, the benefit of relays is that they allow you to control electric circuits in a precise and efficient manner, and activate more than one circuit from a single input.
Every electromechanical relay consists of four components:
- An electromagnet (copper coil wound round a metal core)
- A mechanically movable contact
- Switching points
- A spring
Where are Relays used?
Relays are widely used to switch starting coils, heating elements, pilot lights and audible alarms. The key industries where they are utilised include automotive manufacturing and marine & boat building.
Types of Relays
We supply a wide range of relays suitable for a wide variety of applications. The four key subcategories are as follows:
Heavy duty relays are usually small, lightweight, reliable and durable. You will most commonly find these in the automation industry, being used within industrial controls and in commercial and domestic electrical appliances. Heavy duty relays offer a long electrical life and low life cycle costs, with a rated voltage of 12V and 24V DC. These relays are often used within demanding applications due to their ability to stop heavy loads.
We have a wide range of communication relays which are designed to transmit data signals to another device/destination. Communication relays are commonly used in (but not limited to) the automotive industry, broadcast industry, weather systems, and medical equipment.
General purpose relays are applied mainly in industrial and power automation systems, as well as in signalling and protection systems. General purpose relays are quick and easy to install and are very secure.
An automotive flasher is an OEM replacement for most applications. They are available in two types: thermal type or electromechanical type, and are used as a flashing light; especially in the automotive industry.
