Why are electronics getting smaller?
We are all aware that technological advancements are consistently trending towards devices and machines becoming smaller, sleeker and more streamlined. There are many reasons that this is beneficial, with a key factor being that smaller, less clunky tech is generally more aesthetically appealing, which therefore increases the appeal to the consumer. Smaller devices also weigh less, which can reduce transportation costs, as well as making handheld devices easier to use. In addition to shipping costs, using smaller components should reduce manufacturing costs in the long run, as less materials are being used.
The shrinking of devices and machinery tends to go hand-in-hand with improvements in efficiency, power and speed. Devices that can do more whilst consuming less energy are able to reduce running costs and heat dissipation, which contributes overall to a more eco-friendly product.
Which components are best for smaller devices?
As these devices get smaller and thinner, switches and components must also be adapted and scaled down in order to fit them. Luckily, RJS Electronics offer a wide range of switches and components that are smaller and/or low profile (taking up less space on a PCB or behind a panel).
Low Profile Metal Push Buttons
Our RJS1N1LP series metal anti-vandal push buttons are a great place to start if you want to reduce the space behind the panel on your product, whilst still maintaining the quality, function and longevity of other anti-vandal switches.
These versatile buttons are available in sizes ranging from as small as 12mm, with a variety of material and LED illumination options. This switches in this series also have an IP65 rating or higher, making them resistant to dust and water.
RJSSF66BA-Z
If you are looking for a multifunctional navigation switch with a slim profile, look no further than the RJSSF66BA-Z.
This programmable switch has a height of only 8.5mm, and features microprocessors with up to 9 keys. It is SPI compatible and is available with blue LED illumination and an IP65 rating. Custom legends can also be added to each key within the switch.
RJS-SLC
The RJS-SLC is a compact push button that features a high resolution OLED display. This button is fully programmable, with a built-in I2C interface. It also has the added benefit of a silent push function, meaning that it is especially well-suited to broadcast applications.
As it can be closely mounted to other components, the RJS-SLC is great for devices with limited space, and its sleek design is sure to add a high-end finish to any product.
Micro Switches
PCB mount Micro Switches are an excellent option for internal switches in smaller devices. Featuring spring-loaded levers to open and close internal circuits, micro switches can be highly useful and versatile.
These switches are best suited to low current and low voltage applications and have the advantage of being very long-lasting, reliable and durable.
Toggle Switches
Toggle switches are a standard feature in many devices and machines due to their simple function. In cases where you need to conserve space whilst still maintaining quality and usability, we offer toggles in miniature, ultra-miniature and sub-miniature sizes.
These switches are available with a variety of actuator styles and configurations to suit your requirements, as well as IP rated options.
Tact Switches
Another common solution for devices that require small push buttons is to use tact switches. These miniature PCB mount switches are so called due to the ‘clicky’ tactile feedback they provide when they are pressed.
We offer a wide range of both non-illuminated and LED illuminated tact switches in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours.
In Conclusion
It seems unlikely that the trend of electronic devices getting smaller and slimmer is not about to come to an end any time soon, as the demand for new innovations and better components is always present.
