Sports Broadcasting: The Top Trends for 2025
In the post-pandemic world, the live broadcasting of events has become a massive industry, with sports broadcasting in particular leading the charge. Earlier this month, a massive 127.7 million people tuned in to the Superbowl, whilst the Paris Olympics last year was followed by billions. Sports fans no longer have to worry about getting tickets to the biggest events, as it’s so easy (and in some ways better) to watch it from the comfort of your home.
Over the decades, technological advancements have completely transformed the ways that fans can experience their favourite sports. From the starting point of simple radio broadcasts, to immersive, high-definition television events, sports broadcasting has been revolutionised as broadcasting equipment is improved. In this blog we’re diving into the key trends for sports broadcasting in 2025.
Esports
One area of sports broadcasting that is quickly gaining momentum is the world of esports. This lucrative industry has become so popular due to its accessibility, inclusivity and its uniquely successful ability to cross the cultural and geographical barriers that often hold back traditional sports events.
All you need to enter the world of esports is an internet connection, and you can stream tournaments all over the world. This accessibility even extends to the players themselves, as esports doesn’t require the physical prowess or expensive equipment and facilities of traditional sports. However, this ease of access doesn’t mean that it isn’t a money-maker. Esports teams take part in multi-million dollar tournaments and players are known to frequently receive huge sponsorship deals.
Improvements in technology, such as 4k streaming and super-fast gaming PCs have made both watching and playing esports even easier. As a result, esports has created one of the most engaged communities in the world, as fans can actively participate in events through streaming platforms, forums and social media.

Virtual Reality
As the technology and capabilities of virtual and augmented reality have improved in recent years, the ways in which they can be used have been expanded in ever more exciting ways.
A massive trend for sports broadcasting and entertainment that is on the rise is the livestreaming of events in VR. There are a lot of factors that make this so enticing to viewers and arguably provides a better experience than watching a game on a regular television. For example, a VR ‘ticket’ can get you front-row access to any game or event (or even closer in some cases) and the 3D, 360° immersive element makes it feel as though you’re really part of the crowd. You can also access real-time data overlays and extra features like stats and player-tracking that you don’t get on your TV. Some platforms have even started to offer bonus activities such as virtual tours stadiums and training with the athletes.
Remote Production
Another way in which sports broadcasting is evolving is through remote production. Being able to produce live sporting events remotely has a great number of benefits and will likely become the norm very soon. In the past, the only way to televise an event was to transport a large camera and production team to the location, along with all of their bulky equipment. This inevitably came with many expenses and logistical challenges, but the alternative at the time of satellite links was even more costly. But with the combination of technology – such as carrier bandwidth and the cloud – becoming more accessible and affordable, as well as the necessity driven by the pandemic, remote production only makes sense.
The reduction of onsite resources and staff not only saves money, but it also allows for a more streamlined production process and the optimisation of equipment at a central hub. Furthermore, producing a broadcast remotely means that you can expand the reach of the content and create more flexibility for your production team, as well as being able to offer high quality productions to sports teams and leagues that ordinarily wouldn’t be able to afford it.
Star Equipment
We have already covered a lot of the technology being utilised in sports broadcasting, but physical equipment also plays a big part in a high quality production.
From high speed to slow motion, modern cameras are able to capture so much of the action and create a deeper level of immersion for the viewers. Alongside these advancements, some production teams are beginning to experiment with additional cameras such as drones and body cameras for referees to give the viewers even more angles to catch the action.

Broadcast Components
High quality production equipment requires high quality components…

Summary
There is no question that sports broadcasting is an incredibly successful and profitable industry, which is only set to grow with these advancements in technology and accessibility. As production capabilities and immersive elements like social media and virtual reality continue to evolve, who knows what the future of sports entertainment might look like!
